The most important thing about Maanlig Media is that it is run by students. We as students are required to make these productions because it is part of our syllabus at CityVarsity. CityVarsity do not supply us with any budget for these productions and therefore it rests on the shoulders of the students to fund raise for productions.
Our productions also do not receive any return, because we usually do not sell them to distributors. There isn’t really a marketplace for short films in South Africa. It seems to be gradually developing with the rise of sites such as Showmax and Netflix, as well as the renowned Silverskerm Film festival. We hope that future film students will have a bigger opportunity to sell their films soon.
HELP US MAKE OUR VISION A REALITY!
IN THE MEANWHILE…We ask YOUR help. Help us to make an amazing film. Film budgets are very big, there are a lot of expenses to cover and every little contribution can help us to UP our production quality.
Let’s break the stereotype… Student films does have a slight reputation for being sub-standard. This can be contributed to a lot of factors, but mainly it is because we make very big ideas happen with very little money.
Where does the money go? Student films have the same expenses that normal productions have, excluding the labour costs of the students. Students still need to cover location fees, catering on set, fees of actors, accommodation, petrol, equipment etc.
Terugkeer van ‘n Soldaat is an elaborate production, it is a period film, and therefore production costs pile up very quickly! The estimate worth of this film is around R60 000. In the industry this film will almost cost 2 and a half times more to produce.
Where does all the money go?
For this production a lot of the funds go toward the location. Because this film is a period film and a ghost story it is very practical to go and shoot in Matjiesfontein. The town is about 250 km out of Cape Town and has enough charm and ghost stories to fill another Dickens novel.
We ask the public to support us in this venture. We would like to raise some funds through crowdfunding on this site.
The motto of crowdfunding is a little goes a long way!
